What is the Subacromial Space?

The subacromial space is a small area between the acromion (a part of the shoulder blade) and the rotator cuff tendons. This space allows smooth movement of the shoulder joint and prevents friction between bones, tendons, and ligaments.

  • Subacromial Bursa
  • Supraspinatus Tendon
  • Acromion
  • Coracoacromial Ligament

Common Problems Affecting the Subacromial Space

Subacromial Impingement Syndrome
  • The rotator cuff tendons get pinched between the acromion and humeral head.
  • Causes: Repetitive overhead activities, poor posture, or bone spurs.
Rotator Cuff Tendinitis (Inflammation)
  • Overuse or excessive strain leads to swelling of the rotator cuff tendons.
  • Symptoms: Pain in the front or side of the shoulder, especially at night.
Subacromial Bursitis (Fluid Sac Inflammation)
  • The bursa in the subacromial space becomes inflamed, causing pain and stiffness.
  • Often linked to impingement syndrome or rotator cuff injuries.
