What is a PLC Tear?

The Posterolateral Corner (PLC) of the knee is a complex structure consisting of ligaments, tendons, and soft tissues that stabilize the outer (lateral) and back (posterior) part of the knee. A PLC tear occurs when these structures are injured, leading to knee instability, pain, and difficulty walking.

PLC injuries are often associated with PCL or ACL tears and require prompt treatment to prevent long-term knee damage.

PLC Reconstruction Surgery (For Severe Tears & Instability)
  • Autograft (Patient's Own Tissue) – Uses a hamstring or quadriceps tendon.
  • Allograft (Donor Tissue) – Used for severe cases requiring multiple repairs.
  • Arthroscopic or Open Surgery – Minimally invasive or traditional methods, depending on the injury severity.
PLC Reconstruction Surgery – Step by Step
  • Pre-Surgery Preparation: Medical evaluation, imaging tests (MRI/X-ray), and anesthesia administration.
  • Surgical Incisions & Graft Harvesting: Tendon grafts are prepared.
  • Repair of Torn Ligaments: Reconstructing the LCL, popliteus tendon, and popliteofibular ligament.
  • Fixation & Stability Check: Screws and anchors secure the graft in place.
  • Incision Closure & Recovery: The knee is immobilized, and rehabilitation begins.
Recovery & Rehabilitation After PLC Surgery
  • Walking with crutches for 6-8 weeks
