What to Expect After Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

Arthroscopic knee surgery is a minimally invasive procedure, allowing for faster recovery, less pain, and minimal scarring compared to traditional open surgery. However, proper post-operative care is crucial for optimal healing and a full return to normal activities.

Immediate Post-Surgery Recovery

In the Recovery Room
  • After surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery area until the anesthesia wears off.
  • Your vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels) will be closely monitored.
  • You may experience mild swelling, discomfort, or stiffness, which is normal.
  • Ice packs and pain medications may be given to reduce pain and inflammation.
Discharge & Going Home
  • Most patients go home the same day (outpatient procedure).
  • You will need someone to drive you home, as anesthesia effects can linger.
  • Your surgeon will provide specific post-operative instructions

Home Care & Recovery Tips

Managing Pain & Swelling
  • Apply ice packs to the knee for 15–20 minutes every few hours (first 48 hours).
  • Keep the knee elevated (above heart level) to reduce swelling.
  • Take prescribed pain medications as directed.
Protecting the Surgical Site
  • Keep the bandages clean and dry.
  • Avoid submerging the knee in water (baths, pools) until stitches are removed.
