What Happens After Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery?

After a successful arthroscopic shoulder surgery, proper post-operative care is essential for optimal recovery, pain management, and regaining shoulder function. Patients are typically discharged the same day with detailed instructions for home care and rehabilitation.

🔹 Hospital Stay: Outpatient procedure (go home the same day)
🔹 Sling Usage: Usually 2 to 6 weeks for protection and healing
🔹 Pain & Swelling: Normal after surgery, managed with medications and ice therapy
🔹 Physical Therapy: Starts after 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the procedure

Recovery Timeline & Rehabilitation

  • Week 1-2: Early Recovery Phase
  • Month 2-3: Strength & Stability Training
  • Week 3-6: Gradual Shoulder Mobilization
  • Month 4-6: Full Recovery & Return to Sports

Immediate Post-Surgery Care

Recovery Room Monitoring
  • After surgery, you'll be moved to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
  • Vital signs like heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure are monitored.
  • You may feel drowsy, but nurses ensure you are stable before discharge.
Pain Management
  • Prescribed painkillers (NSAIDs, opioids, or nerve blocks) help manage discomfort.
  • Ice therapy (15-20 minutes every few hours) reduces swelling and pain.
  • Avoid strenuous activity to prevent increased pain or swelling.
Shoulder Sling & Immobilization
  • A sling is worn for 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the surgery performed.
  • Helps protect the shoulder and prevents excessive movement.
  • Do not remove the sling unless instructed by the doctor.
Wound Care & Bathing
  • Keep the surgical incisions dry and clean for the first few days.
  • Avoid showers for 48 hours (use a sponge bath if necessary).v
  • Once cleared, cover incisions with waterproof dressings when showering.
