What is the Glenoid Labrum?

The glenoid labrum is a cartilaginous ring that surrounds the glenoid cavity of the shoulder joint. It plays a crucial role in shoulder stability, helping keep the humeral head (upper arm bone) securely in place while allowing smooth movement.

Since the shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, the labrum acts as a cushion and stabilizer, preventing dislocations and excessive motion. Injuries to the glenoid labrum can cause pain, instability, and limited shoulder function

Common Glenoid Labrum Injuries

SLAP Tear (Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior)
  • Occurs at the top of the labrum where the biceps tendon attaches
  • Common in athletes involved in throwing, weightlifting, or overhead activities.
  • Symptoms: Deep shoulder pain, clicking or popping, and weakness
Bankart Lesion (Anterior Labral Tear)
  • Often caused by shoulder dislocation, especially in younger individuals.
  • Affects the front (anterior) portion of the labrum, making the shoulder unstable.
  • Symptoms: Shoulder slipping out, instability, and recurrent dislocations.
Posterior Labral Tear
  • Less common, occurs at the back (posterior) part of the labrum.
  • Often seen in weightlifters, football players, or individuals with shoulder trauma.
  • Symptoms: Pain during movement, weakness, and limited range of motion.
