What is an MPFL Tear?

The Medial Patellofemoral Ligament (MPFL) is a critical ligament that stabilizes the kneecap (patella) and prevents it from dislocating outward. It connects the inner side of the patella to the femur (thigh bone).

An MPFL tear occurs when this ligament is stretched or torn due to excessive force, often during sudden knee twisting, direct impact, or a traumatic dislocation of the patella.

Non-Surgical Treatment (For Partial Tears)

MPFL Reconstruction Surgery (For Complete Tears & Chronic Instability)
  • Autograft (Patient's Own Tendon) – Uses hamstring or quadriceps tendon.
  • Allograft (Donor Tissue) – Used in complex cases requiring extra support.
  • Arthroscopic or Open Surgery – Depending on injury severity and patient anatomy.
MPFL Reconstruction Surgery – Step by Step
  • Pre-Surgery Evaluation: MRI, X-ray, and anesthesia assessment.
  • Incisions & Graft Harvesting: Small incisions are made, and the graft is prepared.
  • Graft Placement & Fixation: The new ligament is secured between the patella and femur using screws or sutures.
  • Stability Testing & Closure: The knee is tested for proper patellar alignment and stability.
  • Incision Closure & Recovery: The knee is immobilized for healing.
Recovery & Rehabilitation After MPFL Surgery
  • Walking with crutches for 2-4 weeks
  • Resume sports in 4-6 months (with full rehabilitation)
  • Avoid jumping, squatting, or high-impact activities until fully healed
