Anatomy of the Iliotibial Band (IT Band) – Structure, Function, and Clinical Relevance

What is the Iliotibial Band?

The Iliotibial Band (IT Band) is a thick, fibrous band of connective tissue that runs along the outer thigh, from the hip (ilium) to the shin (tibia). It plays a crucial role in stabilizing the knee joint and facilitating smooth lower limb movements.

The IT Band works in coordination with the gluteal muscles and the tensor fasciae latae (TFL) to support leg movement, particularly during activities like running, walking, and cycling.
