Accessing the Shoulder Joint

  • Muscle and Tissue Relocation: Once the incision is made, muscles and tissues around the shoulder joint are carefully moved aside, allowing the surgeon to access the shoulder joint.
Removal of the Damaged Shoulder Joint
  • Removal of the Ball (Humeral Head): In total shoulder replacement, the ball portion of the upper arm (humerus) is removed. In a reverse shoulder replacement, this may involve reshaping or removing the humeral head.
  • Removal of the Glenoid (Socket): If necessary, the glenoid (the shallow socket of the shoulder blade) may be removed or restructured to accommodate the prosthesis.
Implanting the Prosthesis
  • Humeral Component: The surgeon will insert a metal or ceramic ball at the top of your humerus (upper arm bone) to replace the damaged ball of the joint.
