What to Expect Immediately After Surgery?

The First 24-48 Hours After Shoulder Replacement Surgery
  • Pain Control: Your pain will be managed through medication and possibly a nerve block to provide relief.
  • Surgical Site Care: The surgical site will be monitored for signs of infection or complications.
  • Limited Mobility: You will be encouraged to move your hand and wrist gently to maintain blood circulation and prevent blood clots.
  • Physical Therapy: Passive movement exercises may be initiated by a physiotherapist to help you start the healing process while minimizing stress on the shoulder.
First Week to First Month: Early Recovery Phase
  • Sling Use: You will be asked to wear the shoulder sling or immobilizer for up to 4-6 weeks to prevent strain on the joint. The sling helps protect the shoulder during healing.
  • Physical Therapy: Your physiotherapist will guide you through a series of gentle exercises designed to regain flexibility and strength in the shoulder joint. These exercises typically include passive range-of-motion exercises (where the therapist moves your arm) to ensure that the joint stays flexible without exerting too much force.
First 3 to 6 Months: Regaining Strength and Function
  • Active Range of Motion: By the second month, you will likely begin active exercises, where you use your muscles to move your shoulder. This helps rebuild strength and muscle coordination.
  • Strengthening Exercises: As your range of motion improves, strengthening exercises will be introduced to help you regain muscle mass around the shoulder and increase stability.
  • Improved Mobility: By the third to sixth month, you should notice significant improvements in your ability to lift and move your arm, although you may not yet achieve full motion.
After 6 Months: Long-Term Recovery and Full Rehabilitation
  • Full Range of Motion: Depending on your progress, you may achieve near-complete range of motion. You will be able to perform tasks like lifting objects, reaching overhead, and even participating in low-impact sports or activities.
  • Strength: The muscles around your shoulder will be stronger, and you’ll notice improved stability and functionality. However, some patients may not return to full strength in the shoulder for up to a year or more.
  • Long-Term Physical Therapy: Ongoing therapy is sometimes recommended for continued strength building and to optimize shoulder function.
