Step-by-Step Procedure of HTO

Anesthesia & Patient Preparation
  • The patient is administered regional (spinal/epidural) or general anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience.
  • The surgical area is sterilized, and the patient is positioned for optimal access to the knee joint.
Making the Surgical Incision & Bone Access
  • A small incision is made on the upper part of the shinbone (tibia).
  • The surgeon carefully exposes the bone while protecting nearby soft tissues.
Cutting & Realigning the Tibia
  • A controlled wedge-shaped cut (osteotomy) is made in the tibia at the precise angle required for correction.
  • The bone is then gently opened or closed depending on whether the patient needs valgus (inward) or varus (outward) correction.
  • This redistributes body weight more evenly across the knee joint, relieving pain and preventing further damage.
