Prepatellar Bursitis – Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

What is Prepatellar Bursitis?

Prepatellar Bursitis, also known as “Housemaid’s Knee,” is the inflammation of the prepatellar bursa, a fluid-filled sac located in front of the kneecap (patella). This bursa reduces friction and provides cushioning between the skin and the kneecap. However, repetitive kneeling, trauma, or infections can cause it to become irritated and swollen.

Prepatellar bursitis is common in individuals who frequently kneel, such as plumbers, carpenters, wrestlers, and gardeners.

Causes of Prepatellar Bursitis

  • Frequent Kneeling
  • Direct Trauma
  • Infection (Septic Bursitis)
  • Overuse & Repetitive Movements

Treatment Options for Prepatellar Bursitis

Conservative (Non-Surgical) Treatments
  • Rest & Activity Modification: Avoid excessive kneeling or strenuous activities.
  • Ice Therapy: Apply ice packs for 15-20 minutes several times a day to reduce swelling.
  • Compression & Elevation: Wearing a knee sleeve or wrapping the knee can minimize swelling.
Surgical Treatment (For Severe Cases)
  • Bursa Removal (Bursectomy): In rare cases of chronic or recurrent bursitis, surgical removal of the bursa may be required.
Symptoms of Prepatellar Bursitis
  • Swelling Over the Kneecap: A noticeable lump or puffiness in the front of the knee.
  • Pain & Tenderness: Discomfort, especially when kneeling or applying pressure.
  • Redness & Warmth: Indicates possible infection (septic bursitis).
Diagnosis of Prepatellar Bursitis
  • Physical Examination: The doctor will assess swelling, tenderness, and signs of infection.
  • X-rays or MRI: Helps rule out fractures or underlying joint conditions.
  • Fluid Aspiration (For Infection Check): A sample of bursa fluid may be taken for lab testing to detect infections or crystals from gout.
