Understanding Knee Fractures, Causes, Treatment, and Recovery

What Are Knee Fractures?

Knee fractures refer to breaks in the bones around the knee joint, including:
✔ Patella (Kneecap) Fracture – A break in the small bone at the front of the knee.
✔ Distal Femur Fracture – A break in the lower part of the thigh bone (femur).
✔ Proximal Tibia Fracture – A fracture in the upper part of the shinbone (tibia).
✔ Tibial Plateau Fracture – A complex break in the weight-bearing surface of the tibia.

These fractures can result from trauma, falls, sports injuries, or accidents.

Symptoms of Knee Fractures
  • Severe pain & swelling around the knee
  • Inability to move or bear weight on the leg
  • Bruising & tenderness in the knee area
  • Visible deformity (in severe fractures)
  • Grinding or clicking sensations when trying to move the knee
Diagnosis of Knee Fractures
  • Physical Examination – Checking knee stability and movement.
  • X-rays – To identify the location and severity of the fracture.
  • CT Scan / MRI – To assess soft tissue damage and complex fractures.

Treatment Options for Knee Fractures

Non-Surgical Treatment (For Minor Fractures)
  • Immobilization with a cast or brace to allow healing.
  • Pain management with medications and ice therapy.
  • Physical therapy to restore knee function.
Surgical Treatment (For Severe Fractures)
  • Open Reduction & Internal Fixation (ORIF) – Using screws, plates, or rods to stabilize the bone.
  • External Fixation – A temporary frame outside the leg to hold bones in place.
  • Knee Replacement (In Some Cases) – If the fracture severely damages the joint, a partial or total knee replacement may be needed.
