Complications of Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Infection
  • Risk: Infection is one of the most common complications following surgery.
  • Cause: It can occur at the surgical site, deep within the joint, or in surrounding tissues.
  • Symptoms: Redness, warmth, swelling, fever, or increased pain.
  • Management: Early detection is critical. If an infection is suspected, antibiotics may be prescribed, or in severe cases, additional surgical intervention may be required to clean the area.
Blood Clots (Deep Vein Thrombosis or Pulmonary Embolism)
  • Risk: Blood clots can form in the veins of the legs or elsewhere, and in rare cases, can travel to the lungs (pulmonary embolism).
  • Cause: Prolonged immobility during the recovery process increases the risk of blood clots.
  • Symptoms: Swelling, pain, or redness in the legs (DVT) or shortness of breath, chest pain (PE).
