Why is Pre-Surgery Preparation Important?

Good pre-surgery preparation can play a key role in ensuring a successful procedure and a smoother recovery process. When you follow the necessary instructions and take proactive steps to optimize your health, you’ll increase your chances of achieving the best possible results. A well-prepared body and mind can also reduce the risk of complications during and after surgery.

Pre-Surgery Steps for Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Preoperative Evaluation and Planning
  • Evaluate your medical history and current shoulder condition, performing physical exams and diagnostic tests (such as X-rays or MRIs).
  • Discuss your pain levels, how the injury or condition affects your daily activities, and explore your treatment options.
  • Explain the surgical procedure in detail, the type of prosthesis to be used, and the expected outcome.
Medical Assessment and Testing
  • Blood tests to assess overall health, including kidney and liver function, and check for any signs of infection or anemia.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) to check your heart health, particularly if you have a history of heart problems.
  • Chest X-ray to ensure there are no respiratory issues that could interfere with anesthesia.
  • Urinalysis to rule out any urinary infections or issues.
Medication Management
  • Discontinuing blood thinners: Medications such as aspirin, warfarin, or other blood thinners may need to be stopped several days before surgery to reduce the risk of bleeding.
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should typically be stopped before surgery to reduce the risk of complications during healing.
  • Diabetic medications: If you have diabetes, your surgeon will advise adjustments to your insulin or other medications to keep your blood sugar levels in control.
Follow Pre-Surgery Instructions Carefully
  • Fasting instructions: You will likely be instructed to fast for at least 8-12 hours before surgery. This is important to reduce the risk of complications with anesthesia.
  • Arriving at the hospital: You will be given a specific time to arrive at the hospital or surgical center on the day of surgery. Be sure to arrive early to complete necessary paperwork and pre-surgery preparations.
  • What to bring: Make sure to bring comfortable clothing, a list of medications, and any medical records that are relevant to your surgery.
